Got questions about Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant? Find answers about gameplay, endings, technical issues, and the cultural references that make this game special.

General Questions

What kind of game is Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant?

Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant is a story-driven horror game disguised as a cooking simulation. While you run a Vietnamese pho restaurant by day, the game gradually reveals dark secrets, supernatural elements, and a crime thriller plot. You play as an undercover agent investigating a criminal organization called 'Thiên Đường' (Paradise).

Who made this game?

The game was created by Tung, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), under the developer name 'marisa0704'. Tung has been making games since high school and has created over 200 games. Brother Hai's Pho Restaurant became his breakout viral hit in October 2024.

Is the game really free?

Yes! The game is completely free to download and play on itch.io. There are no hidden costs, no ads, no in-app purchases, and no paywalls. The developer released it as a passion project celebrating Vietnamese culture.

How long does it take to complete?

A single playthrough takes 40 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on your exploration style. To experience all 4 endings and find all secrets, expect 3-5 hours of total gameplay. Speedrunners can complete it in under 30 minutes.

Why is the pho only 15,000 VND?

This is an intentional clue! Real pho in Hanoi costs 35,000-50,000 VND. The absurdly low price is a hint that Anh Hai isn't running a real business - he's an undercover agent maintaining a cover. Vietnamese players immediately recognize this as the 'undercover cop' trope.

What does 'Thiên Đường' mean?

'Thiên Đường' means 'Paradise' or 'Heaven' in Vietnamese. The criminal organization ironically chose this name despite their brutal activities. The name serves as dark humor - the 'paradise' they offer is actually exploitation and violence.

The game is lagging. What can I do?

Gameplay Questions

How do I save my game?

The game auto-saves at certain checkpoints (typically at the start of each day). You can also access the save menu by pressing Tab. We recommend creating manual saves before Days 4, 13, and 17, which are major story branching points.

Why did my dish fail?

The most common reason is adding broth at the wrong time. Broth must ALWAYS be added LAST. The correct order is: Bowl → Noodles → Meat → Toppings → Broth. If you add broth before toppings, the dish fails automatically.

My dog got stolen! Can I get him back?

Unfortunately, no. If Cậu Vàng is taken by dog thieves, you've triggered Bad Ending #1 ('Cậu Vàng đi đời rồi'). You'll need to reload an earlier save or restart to try for a different ending. Pet the dog regularly and watch him closely at night to prevent this.

What do the dog's barks mean?

Cậu Vàng's barks are a hint system: 1 bark = examine nearby objects. 2 barks = danger warning, something bad is approaching. 3 barks = hidden collectible nearby. Continuous barking = dog thieves are near, protect him immediately!

I can't find any documents. Where are they?

Documents only appear on certain days and times. Check our Evidence Tracker tool for exact locations. Many documents only appear at night. Some require solving puzzles (like the neon light code for the safe). Talk to NPCs for hints about locations.

How do I decode the neon light patterns?

The neon lights outside the restaurant flicker in patterns on Days 3, 7, 11, and 15. Watch carefully and note the sequence - it follows a simplified Morse code system. The most important code is for the abandoned building safe, which contains a critical document.

What happens if I run out of money?

Running out of money blocks story progression and can lead to a game over. Manage your finances carefully: serve customers accurately, don't waste ingredients, and maintain good reputation for tips. If struggling, focus on simple orders until you're comfortable.

Endings Questions

How many endings are there?

There are 4 endings: 3 bad endings and 1 true ending. The endings are determined by the cumulative choices you make throughout the game, not a single final decision.

What are the 4 endings called?

1) 'Cậu Vàng đi đời rồi' (Mr. Gold is Gone) - Dog gets stolen. 2) 'Quán cháy' (The Restaurant Burns) - Fire from refusing protection money. 3) 'Cụ đi chân lạnh toát' (The Boss Disappears) - Join the criminals. 4) 'Những Bàn Chân Lặng Lẽ' (Silent Footsteps) - True ending, complete the mission.

How do I get the True Ending?

For the True Ending, you must: 1) Protect Cậu Vàng throughout the game. 2) Refuse protection money from Bố Đời. 3) Refuse Phú Bà's offer to join Thiên Đường. 4) Find all 15 documents. 5) Complete all NPC dialogue chains. 6) Maintain 4+ star reputation. 7) Make contact with the night visitor.

Can I see all endings in one playthrough?

No. Each playthrough results in one ending. To see all endings, you need multiple playthroughs or save-scumming from strategic save points. We recommend saving before Days 4, 13, and 17 to easily explore different paths.

Which ending is the 'best' ending?

The True Ending ('Những Bàn Chân Lặng Lẽ' / Silent Footsteps) is considered the 'best' ending. Anh Hai successfully completes his undercover mission, exposes the criminals, honors his father's legacy, and achieves justice. However, the bad endings are also interesting to experience for the story.

I got a bad ending. Did I fail?

Not necessarily! The bad endings are part of the story and provide different perspectives on the narrative. Many players experience Bad Ending #1 (dog theft) first, which is actually the most common first ending. Each ending adds to your understanding of the game's themes.

Story Questions

Who is Anh Hai really?

Anh Hai appears to be a simple pho restaurant owner, but he's actually an undercover police officer. His father was also a police officer who was investigating Thiên Đường before being killed in a 'gas explosion' (actually murder). Anh Hai is continuing his father's mission.

Who killed Anh Hai's father?

Anh Hai's father was killed by the Thiên Đường organization, specifically through the actions of Phú Bà and the Village Chief. The explosion that killed him was made to look like an accident but was actually murder to stop his investigation.

What is the significance of Cậu Vàng's name?

Cậu Vàng (Mr. Gold) is named after the dog in 'Lão Hạc', a famous Vietnamese short story by Nam Cao from 1943. In that tragic tale, an old farmer must sell his beloved dog to survive. This literary reference adds emotional weight to the dog's fate in the game.

Is the game based on a true story?

While not based on a specific true story, the game draws from real Vietnamese social issues: protection rackets (bảo kê), dog theft, corruption in local government, and undercover police work. The cultural details are authentically Vietnamese.

What is the 'Paradise' organization?

'Thiên Đường' (Paradise) is a criminal organization running protection rackets, gambling, and other illegal activities in Dan Phuong district. Led by Phú Bà with the Village Chief as her lieutenant, they've controlled the area for over 15 years.

Cultural Questions

I don't understand the Vietnamese terms. Help!

Key terms: Phở = beef noodle soup. Cậu Vàng = Mr. Gold (the dog). Thiên Đường = Paradise/Heaven. Bảo kê = protection money. Phú Bà = rich lady. Không hành = no onions. Bố Đời = Godfather. Dan Phuong = district in Hanoi.

Why are there plastic stools in the game?

The low plastic stools are iconic in Vietnamese street food culture. Every authentic pho restaurant and sidewalk eatery uses these distinctive red or blue plastic stools. It's a deliberate cultural detail that Vietnamese players instantly recognize.

What's special about the 15K pho price joke?

Vietnamese social media exploded with jokes like 'Phở 15K chắc là công an' (15K pho? Definitely a cop) because real pho costs 35,000-50,000 VND. The absurdly low price became a viral meme, with players immediately recognizing it as an undercover cop trope.

Why did the game go viral in Vietnam?

The game resonated with Vietnamese players through authentic cultural details: realistic street food atmosphere, local humor, literary references (Cậu Vàng), social commentary on real issues (protection rackets, corruption), and the 15K pho meme. International players appreciated the unique setting.

What is the Google Maps incident?

On November 3, 2024, players created a fake Google Maps listing for 'Phở Anh Hai' at the game's fictional address '10 Dan Phuong'. Within hours, it received 500+ reviews with a 4.7-star rating before Google removed it the next morning. This became a famous example of the game's viral impact.
